Tall Ships weekend brings maritime history to life in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is set to welcome a spectacular celebration of maritime heritage as the Tall Ships sail into the city from 19–22 July.
As part of the festivities, visitors are invited to step into the Discovery Zone on Saturday 19 July to explore the Aberdeen Line 200 stand – a unique chance to connect with the city’s rich shipbuilding and seafaring past.
The stand will feature three remarkable guests, each with a deep connection to Aberdeen’s maritime story:
- Stan Bruce, former Hall Russell’s Shipyard worker and author of 17 books on Aberdeen’s shipbuilding legacy, will be sharing insights from his decades of research and first-hand experience.
- Lisa Honan, former Governor of St Helena, was instrumental in commissioning the MV Helena – the last major ship built in Aberdeen. She’ll explain how this vessel serves as a vital lifeline to the remote South Atlantic island.
- David Henry, custodian of the RRS Discovery – the last major wooden tall ship built in Britain – will be on hand to talk about the ship’s incredible journey and preservation.
These passionate storytellers will be available throughout the day to share historical facts, behind-the-scenes stories, and answer questions from visitors of all ages. Whether you're a ship enthusiast or just curious about Aberdeen’s past, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
The stand will also showcase informative displays on the Aberdeen Line, one of the city's most influential shipping companies, and highlight how the international tea trade once helped shape Aberdeen's economy and global connections.
“The Tall Ships event is about celebrating the past, present, and future of maritime life in Aberdeen. "The Aberdeen Line 200 stand is a perfect example of that – bringing together local history, personal stories, and global connections in a way that will truly engage visitors.”
Join them on Saturday 19 July at the Discovery Zone for a rare chance to explore the people, the ships and the stories that helped build Aberdeen’s proud maritime identity.
