Port of Aberdeen celebrates significant win at Trades Awards 2023

Po A Construction Project of the Year

Port of Aberdeen celebrated success at the prestigious Trades Awards 2023 on Friday 28 October, with Aberdeen South Harbour announced as the ‘Construction Project of the Year’.

The award acknowledges the remarkable feat of engineering, planning, and the 300 people who worked on the £420 million project during construction and ongoing operations. In addition, the award recognises how the UK’s largest marine infrastructure project is transforming North East Scotland by supporting the nation’s economic, trade and environmental ambitions.

Officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in September 2023, Port of Aberdeen is now the largest berthage port in Scotland, with an additional 1.5km of deepwater berths (up to a maximum depth of 15m), 125,000sqm of flexible project areas and significant heavy lift capacity.

The expanded Port of Aberdeen is now ideally suited to accommodate a global fleet of larger vessels (up to 300m in length) and is already attracting new projects in oil and gas, offshore wind and decommissioning, as well as increasing cruise and cargo.

The Trades Awards, now in their 11th year, reward and recognise individuals, teams and businesses within the North East Scotland construction industry across a range of fields including construction, sustainability, innovation, and health & safety.

“This recognition underscores the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the project, as well as the innovative spirit that drove us to push the boundaries of what's possible.”

Keith Young
Engineering Director, Port of Aberdeen

Keith Young, Engineering Director, Port of Aberdeen said: "We are absolutely delighted to win Construction Project of the Year. This recognition underscores the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the project, as well as the innovative spirit that drove us to push the boundaries of what's possible.

"Aberdeen South Harbour stands as a testament to our commitment to create prosperity for generations and will be crucial to achieving our vision to become Scotland’s premier net zero port, offering world class facilities and services, at the heart of the nation’s energy transition."

The Trades Awards marks the latest in a string of awards success for Port of Aberdeen. The port recently won the ‘Sustainability’ prize at the British Ports Association Awards and took home the ‘Business of the Year’ accolade at the Northern Star Business Awards earlier this year.
