Port of Aberdeen sets out energy and trade priorities during UK Maritime Minister’s visit

Port of Aberdeen welcomed Keir Mather MP, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Logistics to discuss how the port can grow trade, support the UK’s energy transition and reduce emissions.

The port handled almost three million tonnes of cargo in 2025, with trade spanning 36 countries. The increased capacity and capability at South Harbour offer an opportunity to disrupt established logistics networks by moving more freight by sea. That could take HGVs off the road, easing congestion and cutting emissions.

The minister also heard the case for a shared industry hub at South Harbour, where floating offshore wind turbines could be towed in for major component replacement. Discussions covered how to make green infrastructure viable for ports to install and shore power affordable for vessel operators to use. Wider use of shore power would help Aberdeen achieve its ambition to become the UK’s first net zero port by 2040.

After meeting Harbour Master Benji Morrison and the Vessel Traffic Services team, the Minister toured North Harbour on the water and walked the quayside at South Harbour.

Bob Sanguinetti DL, CEO, Port of Aberdeen, said: “The UK Government wants to generate good growth in every postcode. We have an important role in making that a reality in the North East of Scotland and beyond.

“Oil and gas remains our biggest market, but the decline in activity at the port has accelerated so we’re doubling down on growth in cargo, cruise, renewables and decommissioning. With support from both governments and industry, we can create jobs, unlock opportunities for local businesses, and continue to lead on maritime decarbonisation.”

Maritime Minister Keir Mather, said: "Ports and shipping are the backbone of our economy. They keep Britain moving, bring goods and energy into the country and drive growth in every part of the UK, especially in our coastal communities.

“It was great to see first-hand how the Port of Aberdeen is investing in the green infrastructure of the future, from shore power to its ambition to become the UK's first net zero port.”

"This government is investing £448m to help the maritime industry cut emissions from shipping, while supporting good jobs for local people.”
