Cycling into wellbeing

Meet Douglas Payne, one of our Dock Control Officers, who’s recently taken part in our Cycle to Work Scheme and hasn’t looked back since.
When Douglas’ shift pattern changed, he found it harder to make time for the cycling and swimming he enjoys. But with his new e-bike, he’s found clever ways to build exercise back into his routine – such as cycling to the next station from home and then getting the train to work, or the other way around.

Douglas also admits he was once sceptical about e-bikes, but since joining the scheme, he’s explored even more of Scotland’s trails. From cycling up Clachnaben near Banchory to adventurous days at Tarland and Alyth. Some of his favourite routes include rides over Garvock Hill at Laurencekirk and along the coastal path from Cove to Portlethen – both he feels are perfect for clearing his head after a busy day. He’s also planning adventures to Glenlivet and the Borders.
“Before I got the e-bike, I used to think that the electrical assistance was 'cheating'. But in reality, it’s still exercise – the kind I might not have done otherwise – and it’s been great for relieving the stress of a busy day.”

Douglas continued: “Since joining the scheme, I’ve had a couple of really uplifting rides over the Garvock Hill at Laurencekirk, up the coastal path to Cove and on to Portlethen. I’ve also enjoyed some grand days out above the clouds at Tarland and 'shredding stairsets of doom' at Alyth. Next, I have plans to go further afield to Glenlivet and maybe the Borders in the coming weeks and months.”
Douglas’ story is a great reminder that the Cycle to Work Scheme isn’t just about getting from A to B, it’s about finding new ways to stay active, reduce stress, and make the most of our incredible surroundings.
